A mother who was wrongly convicted of murder donated $10,000 to her prosecutor's election opponent sealing his electoral fate.

At least she got justice in the end. I wonder how many people with similar stories are rotting in prison?

A lot. http://time.com/wrongly-convicted/
TL;DR About 50 murder case retrials per year result in vindication.

I just did a project in my psychology class about the nature of memory and how fallible eyewitness testimony is. It is very well documented how often someone misremembered things, especially a traumatic event like a crime, yet we still convict people solely on eyewitness accounts

And this, future politicians, judges, prosecutors, and sheriffs... is why you need to put in effort to achieve justice if you want to be reelected.
I genuinely hope some of those doctors lost their licenses

Even when the world is against, you have to truly believe in your own justice.

If by that you mean that: if you're truly innocent then don't give up the fight, I agree 100%

Good advice but plenty of people just can't afford to keep fighting. Fighting & winning usually requires an excellent attorney & a great deal of money.

The only thing i see here is that they need money to be re-elected, in this case it might be fair but the system is fundamentally flawed

Why would you want to introduce politics into the criminal justice system

Because $$$$$. Who's going to know to pay me under the table when they don't know what side I lean toward and which of your issues I will be willing to rule in favour of?
Being fair, objective and seeking justice is lame, especially when I can make money by ignoring those things

Well, yes, exactly. Sad but very very true.

Some are elected and some are appointed, but federal judges are appointed by the president so there's usually bias towards their own party's politician leanings

It's still a strange concept to me that the person who can accumulate the most funds will usually be the winner of any political election.

The people who donate money to your campaign like you, and people who like you are what wins elections. Dollars don't play much role in elections(beyond a certain floor that makes you a credible candidate), but voters do, and dollars are a tangible sign of how voters feel.
Any time a politician gets money from a source other than voters(e.g., being personally rich), it's almost totally useless. Look at Jeb Bush, who spent $120 million to finish dismally. That's what "rich people like you, normal people hate you" looks like in practice.
I'd wager the story of her donation won the opponent a lot more votes than the actual donation itself did.

Current potus is a rich media celebrity.

Who was significantly outspent by his competition. If anything, 2016 is a lesson that campaign money is not as big of a factor as previous elections would indicate

He did get quite a bit of free publicity from the media though...and that is usually what the campaign money pays for.

He had his own network for god's sake

RoboNinjaPirate(回楼上)
Trump had a network?
And what do you consider the combined PR efforts of ABC CBS NBC MSN BC PBS NYT PBS and about 95% of the rest of the MSM
